Congrats to John on being first out of the gate on Calgary's protected list. It's only HB but.... it's been a long time since the Flames were first in anything. Hopefully, it's an omen... Well done! |

I forgot that Ryan is from Spokane. Seattle could bail out the Flames like the Knights did last time. At least there are three NHL calibre options with Gio, Lucic, and Ryan. Seems a little more feasible that the Kraken might take a middling prospect to not take Gio since they were never going to make a deal if it meant getting Kylington. |

I popped in to say that Derek Ryan is a feasible choice, instead of Giordano, if the Kraken want to keep/ sign some of the players that they are going to pick.
If you're going for asset management first then Gio is the best pick for them, though, because he could get flipped to another team easily if you don't keep him yourself. |

Sure would be great to get a blog about players left unprotected that would be a good fit on the Flames. This looks like it was hammered out in twenty minutes. |

Unfortunately, the Flames don't have any picks in this year's expansion draft.

John is doing so amazing with write ups... where are my fellow Flames fans. We need to discuss more.
Nothing against you John, we are just not use to having blogs this much
You are doing a great job, and thank you for all you are writing to keep everyone entertained. |

I agree. Would fit in with Sutter hockey.
What are some options on defense that could replace Gio? |

Lindholm? Tanev? Lucic?
For all the people that want Tkachuk to wear the C, there is a reason Bergeron has it in Boston and not Marchand.

To be fair to Marchand, it would be hard for anyone to get the C over Bergeron. But I agree, Tkachuk talking to the refs probably wouldn’t go over too well.
TSN reporting that the Sens and Hurricanes are interested in Monahan. They also report that St. Louis is interested in Tkachuk (obviously). |

You are correct. I was just trying to say that "the pest" game that Tkachu thrives at is not really the behavior you want in your captain.

I want a guy leading this team that will do pretty much whatever it takes to win. Gio, for all he's done on the ice, rarely engages at all. He's the antithesis of Iggy in so many ways.
Chucky hasn't really been the "greasy" pest in quite a while. His last real encounter was with Kassian, and I would submit that he just played a really hard physical game against a guy who wasn't used to it and who he knew would pop eventually. Gets on the odd goalie here and there, but he's not undisciplined about it.
He's smarter than a lot of the guys out there, and with the penalties he's drawn over the years, I wouldn't think that the refs have a negative opinion about the guy.
Call it old school, whatever you want, but I want a guy that approaches the game like he's going into battle and knows that every square inch of the ice is going to be a fight.
Not sure who else on the team they'd hand it to... won't be Mony or Backs and Lindholm wasn't even an alternate last year. |

I agree! I think it opens the door to discussing extension earlier with Chucky. If Chucky truly wants to be a leader he will commit to a team friendlier long term deal & that's when you give him the C. As of now, you cant. I think with the C he matures a bit quicker & would have a good mentor in Looch to sound off on. |

His last encounter was Justin Holl. Leafs fans were salty after that one. Also, hey only 5 goals for Kassian since the incident. You love to see it. Cheers.

I like your thinking. Giving Tkachuk the C changes the attitude of the team completely. It squashes any doubt as to the Flames commitment to the identity of the team. I'm sure Sutter would sit him down and have a long chat before that happens.
Having a more engaged Chucky makes them a better team.

So all indications point to Seattle taking Gio, even if it's flip him at the trade deadline. Would you rather they use that 6.75 to sign Adam Larsson or David Savard? |

Savard. Of the 2.
Also wouldn't say no to Barrie and Oleksiak
